Livingston Travel Guide
Welcome to Livingston!
From its early beginnings in 1882 as a stop for the Northern Pacific Railroad, Livingston has flourished into a modern yet quaint community. The town, situated in the Rocky Mountains of southwestern Montana, is popular with outdoor and culture enthusiasts alike. Numerous galleries, boutiques and cafes adorn its streets and four playhouses frequently feature live music and stage performances. Added to this artsy vibe is a downtown district that is home to over 430 buildings listed on the National Historic Register, which also give the city plenty of old time Western charm. Visitors can further witness the town’s past at the Yellowstone Gateway Museum and the Livingston Depot, a beautifully restored 1902 railway station.
As a gateway town to Yellowstone Park, Livingston is equally known for its outdoor pursuits and idyllic surroundings–appropriately named Paradise Valley. The Gallatin National Forest offers a huge area for hiking and camping while the Yellowstone River has become world renowned for its top-notch fly-fishing, thanks in part to being the film location for movies such as A River Runs Through It and The Horse Whisperer. Livingston’s notoriety goes beyond such films however; Calamity Jane lived here for over 20 years and today several celebrities call the area home.
